Creating Your Lead Wolf

Creating Your Lead Wolf

Before registering for the game, players are tasked with creating their first lead wolf.

This customizer has a limited amount of options, and only allows you to apply three markings to your lead wolf. You are only given Tier 0 markings options to choose from and a select few Tier 1 base options, as well as basic eyes and accents. No one trait in this base creator is "more valuable". Simply design a wolf you love the look of, and keep in mind that there's lots of ways to change them up in the future!

Upon registering, you also choose your lead wolf's name, sex, and personality. Personality does impact gameplay, so we encourage you give our Personality page a look before selecting a personality!

Wolf Name

Wolf Name

Your lead wolf's name can be as unique as you'd like! However, unlike Lioden, it doesn't have to be exclusive. Multiple players can have the same lead wolf name, and you can change your lead wolf's name at any time in their Settings. The only limit is that your wolf's name cannot be more than 25 characters long.

While you can use plain text for your name, many players also choose to use UTF-8 symbols. While these symbols do work on most players' devices, we generally recommend that you do not use them for the following reasons:

  • They often take up more than one character, limiting how many you can use in a name.
  • They do not work for all players. Many players may end up seeing your name as just blank squares, rather than the letters you intended.
  • They are very inaccessible to players using screen-readers, as the screen-reader will read the character's full name (ie. Mathematical Sans-Serif Script T) rather than combining it with the other characters to form a word.

Where possible, we strongly encourage you use plain text in your wolf/player name, rather than Unicode symbols.

Wolf Sex

Wolf Sex

A very common question for new players has to do with the sex of their lead wolf. Does one sex have any benefits over the other? Not really! Both have their pros and cons.

Female lead wolves, if pregnant, will have slower energy regeneration than normal. This means that, if you plan on breeding your female lead wolf, you'll have some periods where exploring might be a bit slower. However, you will be able to have puppies! On the other hand, male lead wolves, if assigned the Breeding Male role, can be bred at basically no cost except for a little bit of energy. However, the only way you would be able to have pups related to your lead wolf is if you make him your breeding male or eventually pairbond him.

So, when choosing a lead wolf, consider whether you plan on breeding them and whether or not you care about slowed energy regeneration.

Experience and Levels

Experience and Levels

As you play, you'll notice your lead wolf gaining experience points. When you first start out, your lead wolf will be Level 1 with no experience points, but this will quickly change as you start exploring, battling, and questing! You can view your lead wolf's current experience and level on the sidebar next to their image or on their wolf page. If you hover over their experience bar on their wolf page, you can view the exact points and percentage needed to get to the next level.

Gaining experience points will allow you to level up your wolf, granting you access to new areas and feature in-game! We'll detail what each level provides in the next section. You can gain experience points through a variety of means. There are currently no items which grant experience points.

  • Winning battles against enemies in explore grants the most EXP points out of any method. If your lead has the Arrogant personality, you will receive a +5% experience boost from battling.
  • Completing daily quests grants a small amount of EXP every day, with more EXP being given for higher-difficult quests.
  • If your lead wolf has the Capable personality, they will receive a small EXP boost from all sources.

The maximum level possible for a wolf is Level 20. This is true both for lead wolves and pack wolves. Once you reach Level 20, you may still gain experience points, but they will not be counted towards any progress bar and will not grant you any benefit.

Whenever you select a new lead wolf, the wolf will retain their level once they become lead. So, if you select a Level 5 wolf to become your new lead wolf, the wolf will remain Level 5 once they are crowned. All of their experience will remain the same.

Lead Wolf Levels

Lead Wolf Levels

As your lead wolf's level increases, you'll unlock more features in-game! If you want to unlock everything, be sure to level up your lead!

Level 5

At Level 5, you gain access to Talents and unlock your first talent point. Talents provide a variety of gameplay benefits and can make some things a lot easier! After Level 5, you will gain one extra talent point with every level.

Level 10

At Level 10, you unlock Raffle Studs, Battle Trophies, and Chased Wolves.

You will be able to view and enter the raffle stud raffle every week on the News page.

A battle trophy is a special item unique to the enemy you're battling, such as a skull or a pelt, that occasionally drops when you beat the enemy. Some trophies are used in crafting recipes while others are food or amusement items. Once your lead wolf is Level 10, any enemy Level 5 or higher will have a small chance of dropping a battle trophy when defeated.

Starting from Level 10 onwards, befriendable wolves you encounter while exploring will have a very small chance of being a wolf chased from another player's pack. Chased wolves will be evident by the purple star in the top left corner of the befriending menu. Since the wolf was chased from another pack, and could have been bred or customized, these wolves have the potential to have any base marking, or other trait if you're lucky! Chased wolves often go for high prices if they have desirable traits, since every chased wolf is Generation 1 with no heritage.

Level 15

Once you reach Level 15, befriendable wolves you encounter while exploring will have a small chance of carrying a "Rating". This will be evident by one to five gold or blue starts in the top left corner of the befriending menu. Hovering over these stars will tell you the wolf's rating.

These Special Befriendable Wolves have Special NBW-exclusive traits corresponding to how many stars they have. If they have two stars, they will have two exclusive traits. You can view a list of all Special NBW-exclusive traits on our Befriending page.
